Budget Forms

The Generic Budget Form (MS Excel) comprises two sections.  The first can be used to compute the proposed costs to the sponsor.  The second can be used to compute the matching (cost-sharing) commitments of the University.  The subtotals within each category and subtotals for the grant period will be calculated automatically.  If additional rows are needed within the categories, they should be added as rows just below the "zeros" so that the automatic summation is maintained.  Please note two categories that may vary among sponsors.

Indirect Costs:

These generic forms assume that the University can request reimbursement for the indirect (F&A) costs at its federally negotiated rate of 42% of the total costs for salaries and fringe benefits.  Some agencies restrict the percentage to a lesser amount and/or require a different basis, e.g., modified total direct costs (MTDC). If the latter is required, it will be necessary to change the formulae in the Indirect Cost cells.

Off-campus Indirect Costs:

The federally negotiated rate is 13.8% from July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2008.

Training Stipends:

These generic forms do not include funds allocated for student support in the direct costs.  This practice is used by the U.S. Department of Education and others.  If the sponsor requires a calculation of indirect costs on the basis of MTDC and allows for student support to be included within the total direct costs, this line item should be moved above the Direct Costs line.

Other Budget Forms:

Here we are providing examples of funding agencies budget forms to aid PI's in the submission of proposals to these agencies. These forms will allow PI's to see what categories are requested as well as the general format of these forms.
