Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the Protection of Human Subjects
These members serves as the University's Institutional Review Board (IRB) to consider research projects and/or activities involving human subjects and ensures that such projects or activities are in compliance with the Code of Federal Regulations 45 CFR 46 (see section 2.8.5 of the Faculty Handbook), as well as 45 CFR 160 and 164, the HIPAA Regulation . This committee is referred to in numerous University documents as the Human Subjects Protection Committee (HSPRC) but will be re-designated as the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the Protection of Human Subjects.

The IRB is responsible for ensuring that adequate safeguards are established to protect any individual who may be at risk as a consequence of participation as a subject in research activities. All investigations, experiments or demonstrations involving human subjects in any way must be reviewed and approved by the HPPC before the activity is undertaken.
